Makarska is compact — no journey inside the town takes more than fifteen minutes on foot. So the question is rarely about distance. It is about the kind of day you want to have.

Sleep inside the Old Town and every evening ends with a slow walk home through stone streets. Stay by the beach and your morning routine is towel, five minutes, sea. Move up onto the hillside and the whole day quiets down: olive trees, a private terrace, the coast far below.

Once you know which of those days sounds like your holiday, the choice becomes simple.

The Old Town is the heart of Makarska — narrow stone streets around Kačić Square, cafés spilling onto the pavement, the marina and the promenade a few steps away. Everything you might want in an evening is on foot.

It suits couples and small groups who enjoy being in the middle of things: dinner at a konoba, a slow walk along the seafront, a coffee taken on a bench in the square. Cars stay parked; you rarely need one.

The trade-off is a lively summer atmosphere — this is where the town gathers after dark. If you are looking for silence at 10pm, the Old Town is not the right choice.

The main beach in Makarska runs for more than a kilometre along the town, backed by pines and the promenade. Staying within walking distance means quick mornings and easy returns — a shower, a nap, and back down to the water without moving the car.

This tends to be the right choice for families with young children and anyone who plans to spend most of their days by the sea. Central Makarska between the marina and the beach is the natural fit.

A short drive above Makarska, the town gives way to olive groves and stone paths. The pace is different up here — fewer people, longer views, cooler evenings — and you get the whole coastline framed by Biokovo.

It is the right choice for travellers looking for calm, and for anyone who wants a private pool and outdoor space to come back to after a day in town. A car is essential; the reward is silence.

For larger families and groups of friends, one shared apartment usually works better than two smaller ones — meals together, a proper living room, and enough bathrooms for everyone in the morning.

Central Makarska, in a quiet residential street a few minutes from the promenade, tends to be the sweet spot. You get space, parking and a short walk to everything.

Parking is easiest outside the very centre. If you are driving, ask about it before you commit to a stay in the Old Town — the streets there are narrow and mostly pedestrian.

August is the busiest month by some distance. If you can travel in June or September, you usually get the best combination of weather, sea temperature and calm.

Air conditioning matters in July and August. Worth confirming rather than assuming.
